R. Kelly’s lawyer has asked for his client’s immediate release after he was allegedly assaulted by a fellow prisoner.
Steve Greenberg has said his client was attacked at a Chicago behavior correctional facility, where Kelly is awaiting trial on allegations of sexual harassment.
The extent of the injuries is still unknown, Mr Greenberg said on Twitter. Kelly has not been convicted of a number of offenses including child abuse and sex trafficking.
Reports of alleged assault were first reported by the TMZ news website, which reported that a fellow inmate started punching Kelly while sitting on her bed.
The inmate was furious about the incidents the head of the prison had visited the station several times because Kelly’s fans were marching outside the facility.
My understanding is that every time there are protests in support of Kelly outside the prison, the whole prison must be closed, “Mr Greenberg said.
“The government cannot guarantee his safety, and it cannot release him,” Mr Greenberg wrote on Twitter.
“We should not imprison people forever because we cannot provide a viable legal process.” A spokesman for the state prison could not confirm or deny reports that Kelly had been assaulted.
Mr Greenberg said he had “received confusing reports about the extent of his injuries and that he had not received any information from the prison”. “It is our hope that he did not suffer serious injuries,” he added.
